Indian
Ring neck Parakeet
Originating in India as their name implies, Indian ring necks are a medium
sized bird with a very long tail. They are a very graceful bird that is
said to be the best talker of the smaller parrots. Ring necks can make
great pets, but they need daily attention to keep them tame. They are not
a cuddly bird like a cockatoo, but can be quite friendly . Most of the
ring neck family is sexually dimorphic when mature (18mos, of age). The
males have the neck
ring and the females don't. As juveniles, males and females are
indistinguishable. There are more color mutations of the Indian ring neck species than
any other bird, except maybe budgies.
Alexandrine
Parakeet
alexandrines are spectacular birds.
They are one of the largest of the ring
neck family, second only to the derbyan.
Overall coloration is green with blue highlights, and a large red patch on
the wings. Males have a bold black and pink ring upon reaching maturity. Besides
their large size, they have a tail that can become very long if they have a tall
roomy cage. Alexandrine's are great talkers and can make very good pets.
However, as with all of the ring neck species, they need frequent handling
to remain tame.
